about

More than six years since the release of his piano trilogy for Decca Classics ("Experiment: Penderecki", "15 Studies for the Oberek", and "24 Preludes & Improvisations)", Piotr Orzechowski returns with an eminently enigmatic album. Though the two long tracks on Critique of Swing consistently continue the artist’s series of unique musical ‘manifestos’, they surprise the ear with an economy of form and their highly personal, intriguing sound.

Pianohooligan’s new, fourth solo album is a simultaneously warm-hearted and analytic take on swing, which as a musical phenomenon constitutes one of the pillars of the artist’s creative thought. Swing is both a foundation of jazz and an inherent element of ‘primitive’ cultures. Through the variational form of his diptych, Orzechowski asks questions concerning the role and the elusive nature of swing, challenging its earlier, common interpretations.
